H.O. Stewart General Store and lot are designated as a Local Historic Place for its historic function as a supplier of basic goods to the community and as a fixture on the Main Street in Rexton since at least the 1860’s.An early deed of that time indicates the property being leased by James Russ whose occupation in the directory of Rexton of 1867 lists him as a merchant and trader. The building has been owned by merchants since that time with a store operating under five different shopkeepers over the years. An advertisement in a local paper of 1918 lists H.O. Stewart’s inventory as boots, shoes, rubbers, men’s hats and caps, and a full line of groceries. He owned the property from 1919 until 1945 when another well known family to the community, the Campbell’s, took ownership. H. O. Stewart General Store was a supplier of basic goods to the community for more than 125 years and a fixture on the Main Street of Rexton.
